Fine Bark Mulch and Natural Ground Cover

Our Composted Bark Fines provide a fine, natural ground cover for flower beds, trees, shrubs and other planted areas. This 3/8-inch minus material consists of screened and composted fir and pine bark.

The fine texture creates a clean, soil-like appearance that helps plants and flowers stand out. Unlike dyed mulch, Bark Fines have a natural dark-brown color that blends easily into many landscape styles.

How Much Bark Should You Install?

Apply approximately 2–3 inches when using Bark Fines as mulch or natural ground cover. A deeper and more even layer provides better moisture retention and weed reduction than a thin covering.

Keep the material from piling directly against plant stems, tree trunks, building siding or other areas where excess moisture could cause problems.

Are Bark Fines the Same as Soil Pep?

Yes. This is the same screened fir and pine bark product that we sell as Soil Pep Conditioner.

Customers commonly call the material Bark Fines when using it as mulch or ground cover. They often call it Soil Pep when mixing it into existing soil or adding it to a planting mix. The product and pricing are the same; the name simply reflects how you plan to use it.

Bark Fines or Traditional Mulch?

Choose Bark Fines when you want a fine, natural surface that resembles rich soil and gradually breaks down into the planting bed.

Choose a larger bark or wood mulch when you want more visible texture and a ground cover that generally takes longer to break down.
