Black Mulch

Black mulch creates bold contrast around flowers, shrubs and other landscape features. Its deep color gives planting beds a clean, finished appearance that works especially well with modern homes, light-colored stone and bright green plants.

This medium-shred mulch is made locally from recycled clean green waste. The supplier processes the material without lumber pallets or treated wood. A water-soluble colorant gives the finished mulch its consistent black appearance.

Locally Produced from Recycled Material

The clean green waste used to produce this mulch is ground and allowed to begin breaking down before it is sold. Turning this material into mulch creates a useful landscaping product while keeping green waste out of the landfill.

Because black mulch is made from recycled organic material, its exact texture and the amount of finer material can vary between loads. Its appearance may also change depending on moisture, lighting and the age of the material.

Installation and Coverage

Install black mulch approximately 3 to 4 inches deep in new landscape beds. One cubic yard covers about 108 square feet at 3 inches deep or 81 square feet at 4 inches deep.

If you are refreshing an existing bed, you may only need a lighter top layer. Sunlight, irrigation and weather will gradually fade the color, so add fresh material when needed to restore the darker appearance.

Keep mulch several inches away from tree trunks, shrub stems and building foundations. Do not pile it directly against plants or create deep mulch mounds around trees.
