Washed Play Sand – Beach & Playground Sand

Washed play sand is a very fine, soft sand for sandboxes, residential playgrounds, backyard beach areas and recreational spaces. Its smooth texture feels comfortable under bare feet and works well for areas where families want a softer surface than coarse construction sand.

This natural sand has a light tan-gray color. Because it is a bulk natural material, slight variations in color and texture may occur between loads.

Uses for Washed Play Sand

Our washed play sand works well for several residential and recreational applications:

• Sandboxes and children’s digging areas
• Residential playground play areas
• Backyard beach-style areas
• Barefoot recreation areas
• Surrounding fire pits and outdoor seating areas
• Decorative sand features

Although this product works well around a fire pit, it is intended for the surrounding landscape or seating area. Follow the fire-pit manufacturer’s instructions for materials placed inside the firebox.

Recommended Installation Depth

For decorative beach-style areas and other light-use applications, install the sand at least 3 inches deep. One cubic yard covers approximately 108 square feet at a 3-inch depth.

Playground and play-area depths depend on the intended use and the equipment manufacturer’s requirements. Specifications may call for approximately 4–12 inches of material. Always follow the depth required by the playground equipment manufacturer or project specifications.

• At 4 inches deep, one cubic yard covers approximately 81 square feet.
• At 6 inches deep, one cubic yard covers approximately 54 square feet.
• At 8 inches deep, one cubic yard covers approximately 40 square feet.
• At 12 inches deep, one cubic yard covers approximately 27 square feet.

These figures are planning estimates. Allow additional material for settling, uneven ground and the desired finished depth.

Important Playground Information

This bulk sand has not been certified or tested as impact-attenuating playground safety surfacing. Suitability and required depth depend on the playground equipment, fall height and applicable project requirements.

For installations beneath playground equipment, review the equipment manufacturer’s specifications before ordering. Rock N Yard can help calculate the volume after you determine the required finished depth.

Not Recommended for Horse Areas

This very fine sand is not the product we recommend for horse arenas or similar equestrian applications. For those areas, consider our coarser Paver Sand 3/16″ – Washed.

Bulk Pickup, Delivery and Installation

Rock N Yard sells washed play sand by the cubic yard. One cubic yard weighs approximately one ton, so the yard and ton-equivalent prices are the same for this product.

This material is available for pickup or delivery, but inventory can vary. Please call to confirm availability, especially for larger orders.

Delivery trucks must remain on accessible concrete or asphalt. The driver makes the final decision about a safe dumping location.
