Sunset Mesa Flagstone for Patios and Walkways

Sunset Mesa flagstone is a natural red sandstone with rich brick-red, rust, copper, and burnt-orange tones, along with some gold variation. Its naturally split faces and irregular shapes give outdoor spaces a warm, earthy character. The photos on this page show the Cherokee Red stone we stock as Sunset Mesa; color, shape, and thickness will vary from piece to piece and pallet to pallet.

Outdoor Uses for Sunset Mesa Flagstone

Sunset Mesa works well for outdoor patios, walkways, garden paths, stepping-stone areas, landings, and spaces around fire pits. Its red and rust tones suit desert-inspired and rustic landscapes, but can also add warmth to a more contemporary yard. One-Ton Pallets and Coverage

We sell Sunset Mesa flagstone in one-ton pallets (2,000 lb). For this generally 1–2″ thick, irregular flagstone, a pallet covers approximately 100–120 square feet with normal gaps between the stones. Your actual coverage depends on piece thickness and shape, gap width, and layout. Full pallets are available for pickup or delivery. If you only need a few pieces, you can select them from an opened pallet for $0.34 per pound; individual pieces are available for pickup only.

Preparing a Base for Irregular Flagstone

A patio or walkway needs a suitable, stable sub-base and a leveling layer appropriate for the site. Like other irregular flagstone, Sunset Mesa has variation in thickness, so setting the pieces evenly can take adjustment to the bedding layer. If you are unsure which base materials or preparation your project needs, ask us before you start. When our crew plans an irregular-flagstone installation, we typically allow an additional 20–25% of leveling-base material to account for that variation. The amount needed for a particular DIY project will depend on its conditions.
