Western Hills Cobble – 2–3″ is a neutral decorative rock with a blend of tan, light gray, dark gray and occasional pink tones. The typical pieces measure approximately 2–3 inches, although some smaller rock may be included. Its versatile colors work well with many homes, plants and other landscape materials.

This is not a crushed rock. Most pieces are naturally rounded, but the material can also contain broken or angular pieces created during quarrying and handling. As a result, Western Hills Cobble has a natural mix of shapes rather than the uniform appearance of a manufactured decorative stone.

Western Hills Cobble Color and Shape

Tan is usually the dominant color, with gray and pink pieces adding variation throughout the material. However, the exact proportions can change from one load to another. Natural rock also looks darker and more colorful when wet. After drying, the colors become lighter and more muted.

The main product photo shows Western Hills Cobble after it has been washed off and allowed to dry. The additional photo shows the rock wet. Both accurately represent the material, but customers should expect natural variation in color, shape and sizing.

Recommended Uses for Western Hills Cobble

The 2–3-inch size creates a substantial decorative surface without using oversized boulders. Common applications include:

• Park strips and low-water landscapes
• Flower beds and landscape planting areas
• Decorative borders and accent sections
• Dry creek beds and drainage swales
• Areas where a larger neutral cobble complements plants or boulders
• Decorative rock around commercial or residential properties

This cobble is too large for pathways or areas that receive regular foot traffic. Its rounded and irregular pieces can shift underfoot and create an uncomfortable walking surface. Choose a smaller gravel or pathway material where comfortable walking is important.

Unwashed Rock and Clay-Based Fines

Western Hills Cobble is an unwashed quarry product. Therefore, newly delivered material may have crusher fines and clay-based soil coating the surface. This quarry contains more clay-type soil than many of our other rock sources, and that material can stick firmly to the cobble.

A fresh load may look significantly dirtier, duller or more uniformly brown than the washed product shown in the main photograph. Rain, irrigation or rinsing will gradually reveal more of the underlying tan, gray and pink colors. The amount of fines can vary between loads.

Recommended Installation Depth

Install Western Hills Cobble approximately 4 inches deep for good coverage. The smaller pieces included in the material help fill some of the spaces between the larger cobbles. Even so, prepare the area evenly and account for natural settling when estimating the quantity needed.
