Decomposed Granite – 3/8″ Minus

Decomposed Granite – 3/8″ Minus is a compactable pathway material made from crushed and naturally weathered granite. This product contains granite pieces measuring approximately 3/8″ and smaller, including the fine material needed to bind the surface together during installation and compaction.

The new material has a light gray, salt-and-pepper appearance with a natural mixture of gray, charcoal and occasional tan mineral tones. It creates a clean, neutral surface that complements a wide range of landscapes while retaining the natural character of crushed granite.

Why Decomposed Granite Compacts

A 3/8″ minus material contains everything passing through a 3/8″ screen, including smaller granite chips, sand-sized particles and fines. When properly placed, moistened and mechanically compacted, these different particle sizes lock together to create a firmer and more stable surface than clean, single-sized gravel.

The loose material may appear dusty or powdery when it is first delivered. This is normal and does not mean the load contains unwanted dirt. The finer granite is an important part of the material and helps it compact. After installation, some of the larger granite pieces may remain visible at the surface.

Installation Recommendations

For best results, install Decomposed Granite approximately 3″ to 4″ deep and compact it using appropriate mechanical compaction equipment. Lightly moistening the material during installation can help the particles settle and bind together. Proper excavation, grading, edge containment and compaction are important for creating an even, durable finished surface.

Decomposed granite is a natural, unbound material. It will not become as rigid as concrete, asphalt or a stabilized commercial pathway system. Periodic maintenance may be needed in areas exposed to concentrated drainage, heavy traffic, snow removal or other disturbance.

Pickup, Delivery and Installation

Bulk 3/8″ Minus Decomposed Granite is available from the Rock N Yard Landscape Center for pickup or delivery throughout the Salt Lake Valley. Delivery material must be placed on a suitable concrete or asphalt surface accessible to our trucks.
