1 Cubic Yard Is Approximately 1.3 Tons
Polar Dusk river rock is a naturally rounded 1–3-inch stone with a mixture of light and dark gray, blue-gray, muted purple, tan and brown tones. This medium-sized river rock adds noticeable texture without overwhelming most residential landscape areas.
This material is not washed. It may contain occasional pockets of natural riverbed fines. The amount of fines can vary between loads.
Uses for Polar Dusk River Rock
The 1–3-inch size works especially well in areas where customers want a substantial decorative stone that still fits comfortably around plants and established landscape features.
- Park strips and water-wise front yards
- Flower beds and landscape areas around homes
- Ponds and water features
- Dry creek beds and decorative drainage features
- Mow strips and landscape borders
- Transitions around boulders and larger decorative rock
Polar Dusk River Rock in Park Strips and Flower Beds
This is a popular size for park strips because it creates a finished, high-end appearance and does not look as fine or gravel-like as smaller rock. The rounded stones also complement shrubs, grasses, perennials and larger landscape boulders.
In flower beds, the 1–3-inch range provides enough size to remain visually distinct around plants. It also works well for creating transitions between turf, planting areas and larger landscape features.
This size is not recommended for pathways or regular walking surfaces. The larger rounded stones can move underfoot and create an ankle-turning hazard. For a walkable surface, choose a smaller or more compactable pathway material.
Recommended Depth for Polar Dusk River Rock
Install this river rock at least 4 inches deep for adequate coverage. At a 4-inch depth, one cubic yard covers approximately 81 square feet.
This coverage figure is a planning estimate. Allow additional material for uneven ground, settling and transitions around plants, edging or boulders.
Natural Color and Fines in Polar Dusk River Rock
Polar Dusk is a natural river rock, so the color mixture, sizing and shape will vary between loads. Some loads may contain more gray and blue stones, while others may show more tan, brown or muted purple.
The rock becomes darker and more vibrant when wet, making it especially attractive in ponds, water features and dry creek beds. We recommend viewing the current material at our Landscape Center if a particular color balance is important to your project.
Because the material is unwashed, occasional riverbed fines may be mixed into the load. These fines do not change the underlying stone but may temporarily affect its appearance.
Other Names for This River Rock
Similar rounded river rock may be marketed by other suppliers as Modern River Cobble, Canadian Blend, Glacier Cobble, Arctic Cobble or decorative pebbles. Exact color mixtures, sizing and sources vary, so compare the actual material rather than relying only on the product name.
