1 Cubic Yard Is Approximately 1.25 Tons

Canyonlands River Rock is a naturally rounded landscape material with warm colors inspired by southern Utah. This 3/4-inch to 2-inch size blends tan, cream, light brown, orange, rust, muted pink and occasional gray. These varied colors work especially well around greenery and flowering plants. They also make this material a popular choice for park strips and other highly visible landscape areas.

Natural processes round these stones rather than mechanical crushing. However, some individual pieces may have broken or angular edges from processing and handling. The broad 3/4-inch to 2-inch size range gives the finished landscape more variation than a uniformly sized gravel.

Canyonlands River Rock Color and Appearance

Rock N Yard supplies this material unwashed. At delivery, orange and red crusher fines may coat the surface of the stones. This coating can temporarily give the entire load a flatter salmon or orange appearance.

Over time, rainfall or a light rinse will remove much of the surface coating and reveal the full mixture of colors. Because this is a natural product, the exact balance of sizes and colors can vary between loads. Some pockets may also contain more fines than others.

Recommended Uses for Canyonlands River Rock

  • Park strips and water-wise landscapes
  • Decorative landscape and flower beds
  • Dry creek beds and drainage areas
  • Borders around plants, trees and shrubs
  • Decorative accents around patios and outdoor living areas

This is one of our more popular river-rock sizes for park strips. The stones are large enough to provide a substantial finished appearance while still fitting comfortably around plants and other landscape features.

Recommended Installation Depth

Install Canyonlands River Rock at approximately 4 inches deep for consistent coverage and easier long-term maintenance. At that depth, one cubic yard covers approximately 81 square feet.

Prepare the area to the proper grade before installing the rock. Landscape fabric may help separate the stone from the soil and reduce mixing. However, fabric does not eliminate every weed, especially weeds that germinate in dust and organic material above it.

Walking and Pathway Considerations

Canyonlands River Rock does not compact into a firm surface. Its rounded shape and broad size range allow the stones to remain loose and can create an uneven walking surface. For frequently used walkways, choose a compacting pathway material instead.

Other Canyonlands River Rock Sizes

For a larger and more substantial look, see our Canyonlands River Rock – 2″-5″. Both sizes share the same warm color family, making them easy to combine in dry creek beds, drainage features and layered landscape designs.
