Grey Pea Gravel is an economical, naturally rounded 3/8-inch-minus rock with a mixture of light and dark gray tones. This washed gravel provides a smaller, softer-feeling surface for loose pathways, dog runs, fire-pit areas, informal play spaces, landscape beds and drainage applications.
Because the stones are naturally rounded rather than fully fractured, they remain loose after installation. This can make the gravel more comfortable to walk on, but it also means that the material behaves differently from compacting pathway chat or construction gravel.
Important: This Material Does Not Compact
Grey Pea Gravel does not compact into a firm or solid surface. The rounded stones will shift underfoot and may require occasional raking. Edging can help contain the gravel along pathways and landscape borders.
Do not use this product for projects that require a stable, compacted foundation. It is not recommended for:
- RV pads or vehicle parking areas
- Gravel driveways
- Bases beneath concrete or asphalt
- Bases beneath pavers or flagstone
- Any project that requires a firm, compacted surface
The gravel is too small and rounded to create a dependable driving surface. Small pieces can also become lodged in tire tread and scatter when vehicles drive over them. For a compactable foundation, consider our Recycled Road Base or ask us which construction gravel best fits your project.
Common Uses for Grey Pea Gravel
- Loose garden and backyard pathways
- Dog runs and pet areas
- Fire-pit seating areas
- Informal backyard play areas
- Budget-friendly landscape beds
- Decorative drainage areas
- Other areas where a small, rounded rock is preferred
Using It for Loose Pathways
Some customers choose Grey Pea Gravel for pathways because its small, rounded stones create a softer walking surface than larger or angular gravel. However, it will not perform like compacting pathway chat. The surface remains loose, may shift during use and can require occasional maintenance.
Choose this material when you want a loose, sand-like gravel surface. If you want a firm pathway that compacts and resists movement, select a crushed pathway chat instead.
Use in Informal Play Areas
Some customers use Grey Pea Gravel as an alternative to sand in informal backyard play areas. It provides a small, rounded surface that is less likely to blow away than sand.
This product is not certified playground safety surfacing. For placement beneath playground equipment, follow the equipment manufacturer’s requirements for approved surfacing, installation depth and fall protection.
Recommended Depth for Grey Pea Gravel
Install Grey Pea Gravel at least 2 inches deep for adequate coverage. We recommend a 3-inch depth when possible for better long-term coverage and easier maintenance.
- At 2 inches deep, one cubic yard covers approximately 162 square feet.
- At 3 inches deep, one cubic yard covers approximately 108 square feet.
Actual coverage can vary depending on the condition of the ground, settlement and how evenly the material is installed.
Washed Gravel and Residual Fines
This is a washed product, but it may still contain a dirty film or a small amount of residual fines. Natural aggregate can also vary slightly in color and sizing between loads. We recommend viewing the material at our landscape center if appearance is especially important to your project.
