1 Cubic Yard Is Approximately 1.25 Tons

Our 1/4-inch pea gravel is an economical, naturally rounded rock containing pieces approximately 1/4 inch and smaller. This washed gravel has a mixture of light and dark gray tones. Its fine size creates a softer, loose surface for pathways, dog runs, fire-pit areas, informal play spaces, landscape beds and drainage applications.

The primary difference between this product and our 3/8-inch Grey Pea Gravel is the size and price. Both products are processed in the same way and have similar uses. Choose the size that provides the appearance and surface texture you prefer.

Important: This Material Does Not Compact

This naturally rounded pea gravel does not compact into a firm or solid surface. The small stones remain loose after installation and may shift underfoot. Pathways may require occasional raking, and landscape edging can help keep the material contained.

This material is not recommended for:

  • RV pads or vehicle parking areas
  • Gravel driveways
  • Bases beneath concrete or asphalt
  • Bases beneath pavers or flagstone
  • Projects that require a stable, compacted foundation

The small stones can become lodged in tire tread and scatter when vehicles drive over them. For a compactable foundation, consider our Recycled Road Base or ask us which construction gravel best fits your project.

Common Uses for 1/4-Inch Pea Gravel

  • Loose garden and backyard pathways
  • Dog runs and pet areas
  • Fire-pit seating areas
  • Informal backyard play areas
  • Budget-friendly landscape beds
  • Decorative drainage areas
  • Areas where a small, rounded stone is preferred

A Smaller Gravel for Loose Pathways

The 1/4-inch size offers a finer appearance than the 3/8-inch option. Some customers prefer its smaller texture for informal garden paths and areas where they want a loose, sand-like gravel surface.

This product will not perform like crushed pathway chat. It remains loose rather than locking together, so it should only be selected when that type of surface is desired.

Use in Informal Play Areas

Some customers choose this smaller pea gravel as an alternative to sand in informal backyard play areas. It creates a small, rounded surface that is less likely to blow away than sand.

This product is not certified playground safety surfacing. When installing material beneath playground equipment, follow the equipment manufacturer’s requirements for approved surfacing, fall protection and installation depth.

Recommended Installation Depth

Install the gravel at least 2 inches deep for adequate coverage. We recommend a 3-inch depth when possible for better long-term coverage and easier maintenance.

  • At 2 inches deep, one cubic yard covers approximately 162 square feet.
  • At 3 inches deep, one cubic yard covers approximately 108 square feet.

Actual coverage can vary depending on the condition of the ground, settlement and how evenly the material is installed.

Washed Gravel and Residual Fines

This is a washed product, but it may still contain a dirty film or a small amount of residual fines. Natural aggregate can also vary slightly in color and sizing between loads. We recommend viewing the material at our landscape center if appearance is especially important to your project.

Compare Grey Pea Gravel Sizes

For a slightly larger option, compare our Grey Pea Gravel – 3/8″ Minus. Both sizes are washed, naturally rounded and non-compacting. The choice generally comes down to price, appearance and personal size preference.

This same 1/4-inch material is also listed as Leveling Gravel or Screed Gravel – 1/4″ Minus for customers searching by its construction applications.
