Our washed, naturally rounded 1/4-inch-minus gravel provides a bedding and leveling layer beneath pavers, flagstone, stepping stones and other hardscape materials. Because of its small particle size, this 1/4-inch screed gravel is easy to spread and screed to the required elevation.

This gravel does not compact into a solid structural base. Therefore, install it only as a thin bedding layer over a properly prepared and compacted base material.

Recommended Base for 1/4-Inch Screed Gravel

For Rock N Yard’s gravel-base installation system, we recommend using Desperado Trail Gravel – 3/4″ Minus as the prepared and compacted base beneath this 1/4-inch screed gravel. Desperado Trail is fully fractured and contains smaller particles that help the base settle and compact.

Use this combination for hardscape applications where drainage is more important than it would be with a traditional road-base installation. First, prepare and compact the 3/4-inch gravel base. Then place and screed a thin layer of leveling gravel before installing the finished hardscape.

However, if you use Recycled Road Base for the structural base, we generally recommend using Paver Sand – 3/16″ Washed for the bedding layer instead.

• Hardscape systems where a gravel base is preferred

Recommended 1/4-Inch Screed Gravel Depth

For concrete pavers and stepping stones, use approximately 1 inch of screed gravel. However, plan approximately 1.5–2 inches beneath flagstone to accommodate variations in stone thickness.

• One cubic yard covers approximately 324 square feet at 1 inch deep.
• One cubic yard covers approximately 216 square feet at 1.5 inches deep.
• One cubic yard covers approximately 162 square feet at 2 inches deep.

Always follow the paver, flagstone or hardscape manufacturer’s specifications. Some systems require a particular bedding aggregate, base material or installation method.

Important Installation Information

This 1/4-inch-minus gravel does not compact. Therefore, install it over a solid, properly prepared base layer. Do not use it as the only material beneath pavers, flagstone or other hardscapes.

Also, do not use this product as the primary surface or base for driveways, RV pads or parking areas. It is too small and too rounded to create a stable driving surface.

Although this is a washed product, some residual fines or a dusty film may remain. Also, expect natural variations in color and particle size.
