Paver Sand – 3/16″ Washed is a coarse sand for bedding and leveling beneath concrete pavers, flagstone and stepping stones. This washed paver sand contains particles up to about 3/16 inch. Its texture makes it easy to spread and screed while still allowing water to move through the finished project.

Washed Paver Sand Uses

Use washed paver sand for several hardscape applications:

• Bedding beneath interlocking concrete pavers
• Leveling beneath flagstone and stepping stones
• Filling tight joints between compatible interlocking pavers
• Creating a smooth layer between a compacted gravel base and the finished surface

This product contains no polymers or hardening additives. You can sweep it into tight joints between interlocking pavers when loose joint sand is appropriate. It will not harden like polymeric sand. Follow the paver manufacturer’s directions when choosing joint material, especially for wide joints or projects that require a binding product.

Washed Paver Sand Bedding Depth

For concrete pavers, use an even bedding layer about 1 inch deep unless the paver manufacturer directs otherwise. Screed the sand over a properly prepared and compacted base. The sand creates the final leveling layer, while the base underneath provides structural support.

Flagstone and natural stepping stones often vary in thickness. For these projects, plan on about 1.5 to 2 inches of paver sand so you can adjust and support each stone. The stone thickness, base preparation and finished height will determine the final amount needed.

This sand consistently loses about 25% of its loose depth as it settles and compacts. For example, 2 inches of loose sand may finish near 1.5 inches. Include this reduction when estimating material for flagstone or other projects that require a specific finished depth.

Build a Stable Base

Start with a stable base of compacted fractured rock or road base. The base supports the project, while the washed paver sand creates the smooth final layer. Excavation depth, base thickness and drainage needs will vary with the project and expected traffic.

Washed Paver Sand Pickup, Delivery and Installation
