3/8 Inch Dry Creek Gravel for Small Landscape Areas
Dry Creek Gravel – 3/8″ is a small, fully fractured decorative rock. The material consists primarily of consistently sized 3/8-inch rock. However, customers should expect some natural size variation.
Its smaller size creates a more finely textured surface than the larger Dry Creek gravel options. For example, it works especially well around garden boxes and in areas where larger rock would look out of scale.
Dry Creek Landscape Gravel Color and Variation
The Dry Creek color family combines dark gray and light gray rock with tan tones. Together, these colors can create a salt-and-pepper appearance. However, the proportion of each color varies naturally between loads. Some loads may appear darker, lighter or more tan than others.
Loads may also contain crusher dust, fines and occasional pockets of fines because this is an unwashed gravel. Processing, loading and handling create these incidental fines. They do not make this a minus-sized gravel.
The fines can temporarily make the rock appear dusty or mute its natural colors. Rain, irrigation or rinsing will gradually expose more of the finished color. In addition, Dry Creek gravel is a natural product, so its exact color proportions and individual rock sizes will vary.
Recommended Landscape Uses
This small decorative gravel works well for:
- Landscape and flower beds
- Garden areas around raised garden boxes
- Park strips
- Rock areas around flagstone
- Small decorative borders and accents
- Water-wise and low-maintenance landscapes
- Loose, informal garden pathways
Informal Pathway Use
Although this gravel is fully fractured, its consistent 3/8-inch sizing prevents it from compacting into the same firm surface as pathway chat. Therefore, use it for informal pathways when you prefer a loose, small-rock surface. Expect some movement underfoot.
For a firmer and more compacted walking surface, choose Dry Creek Pathway Chat. The chat contains a broader blend of small rock and fines that compact together.
Do not use Dry Creek Gravel – 3/8″ for driveways, RV pads or parking surfaces. Its small size cannot create the stable driving surface that a larger gravel provides.
Installation Depth and Coverage
Install this material at a minimum depth of 2 inches. However, planning for approximately 3 inches will provide better initial coverage and make the area easier to maintain over time.
First, prepare and grade the installation area. Then, consider installing landscape fabric to help separate the gravel from the underlying soil in decorative applications.
Compare Dry Creek Landscape Gravel Sizes
The Dry Creek family offers the same general color blend in several sizes:
- Dry Creek Pathway Chat for compacted pathways and walking areas
- Dry Creek Gravel – 3/4″ Minus for beds, informal paths, driveways and parking areas
- Dry Creek Gravel – 1.5″ for landscape beds, park strips and parking areas
- Dry Creek Gravel – 2-3″ for larger park strips, landscape beds and decorative areas
- Dry Creek Cobble – 2-5″ for large beds, drainage swales and dry creek areas
