Dry Creek Cobble – 2-5″ for Large Landscape Areas
Dry Creek Cobble is a large decorative landscape rock with pieces consistently ranging from approximately 2 to 5 inches. Most pieces are crushed and angular, although each load can also contain some naturally rounded rock.
This larger size creates a bold, rugged appearance in areas where smaller gravel may look out of scale. It works especially well in broad landscape beds, dry creek areas and other spaces designed around substantial decorative rock.
Color and Natural Variation
The Dry Creek color family combines dark gray and light gray rock with tan tones. Together, these colors can produce a salt-and-pepper appearance. However, the proportion of each color naturally varies between loads. Some loads may appear darker, lighter or more tan than others.
Dry Creek Cobble is an unwashed product. Crusher dust, fines and occasional pockets of fines may be present when the material is loaded and delivered. These fines can temporarily make the rock look dusty or mute its natural colors. Rain, irrigation or rinsing will gradually expose more of the finished color.
Because this is a natural material, exact color proportions, shapes and individual rock sizes cannot be guaranteed.
Recommended Uses
This 2-5-inch cobble works well anywhere a larger decorative landscape rock is appropriate, including:
- Large landscape and flower beds
- Decorative dry creek beds
- Drainage swales and runoff areas
- Large park strips where regular foot traffic is not required
- Erosion-control areas
- Rock borders and large decorative accents
- Water-wise and low-maintenance landscapes
Due to its large size, this material is not comfortable for pathways or regular walking areas. A smaller Dry Creek gravel or pathway chat will provide a more practical walking surface.
Installation Depth and Coverage
Plan on installing Dry Creek Cobble at a depth of approximately 6 inches. This allows the 2-5-inch pieces to overlap and provides better coverage across the completed area.
Prepare and grade the area before installation. Landscape fabric can help separate the rock from the soil in decorative applications. Drainage and erosion-control projects may require a different base, excavation depth or installation system based on site conditions.
Compare Dry Creek Rock Sizes
The Dry Creek family offers the same general color blend in several sizes for different applications:
- Dry Creek Pathway Chat for compacted pathways and small walking areas
- Dry Creek Gravel – 3/8″ for smaller decorative applications and informal paths
- Dry Creek Gravel – 3/4″ Minus for beds, informal paths, driveways and parking areas
- Dry Creek Gravel – 1.5″ for landscape beds, park strips and parking areas
- Dry Creek Gravel – 2-3″ for park strips, landscape beds and larger decorative areas
