Coarse Fiber Mulch for Trees, Slopes and Landscape Beds
Fiber Mulch is an all-natural shredded fir and pine bark with a large, coarse texture. Most pieces measure approximately 4–6 inches, although occasional pieces may reach about 7 inches. Size, shape and natural bark color will vary between loads.
The fibrous pieces overlap and mat together after installation. This helps the mulch resist movement in windy locations and on hillsides better than loose bark nuggets. Its coarse appearance also works well in large landscape areas where a small mulch may look out of scale.
Benefits of Coarse Shredded Bark
Fiber Mulch provides the same practical benefits as other natural bark products while offering a larger and coarser texture.
- Helps retain moisture around trees and landscape plants
- Insulates roots from temperature changes
- Helps reduce weed growth when installed at the proper depth
- Mats together to help resist wind and movement
- Helps protect exposed soil on slopes and erosion-prone areas
- Adds a natural finish to large landscape beds
Because this is a natural wood product, it will gradually break down and settle. Additional mulch may eventually be needed to maintain the desired depth and appearance.
Recommended Uses
- Orchards and areas around established trees
- Large flower and landscape beds
- Slopes and hillsides
- Windy or exposed landscape areas
- Erosion-prone areas
- Low-maintenance residential and commercial landscapes
- Naturalized and rural landscape designs
Due to its large, coarse pieces, Fiber Mulch is not recommended for regular pathways or areas where people frequently walk. For a smaller shredded bark that is more comfortable underfoot, consider our Supreme Walk-On Bark.
Installation Depth and Coverage
Plan to install Fiber Mulch approximately 4 inches deep for adequate coverage, moisture retention and weed suppression. One cubic yard covers approximately 81 square feet at a 4-inch depth.
The irregular pieces can settle and interlock after installation. Therefore, ordering a little extra may help maintain consistent coverage throughout the project.
When installing around trees, leave space around the trunk and root flare. Do not pile bark directly against the trunk or plant crowns.
Using Landscape Fabric on Slopes
Landscape fabric can provide additional separation between the mulch and underlying soil. On slopes, placing the textured or fuzzy side of the fabric facing upward may help the coarse bark grip the surface more effectively.
Secure the fabric properly before spreading the mulch. Our 30-year landscape fabric and landscape fabric staples are available for projects that need additional soil separation or weed control.
Fiber Mulch or Supreme Walk-On Bark?
Choose Fiber Mulch when you want a large, coarse shredded bark for orchards, hillsides, trees or expansive landscape beds. Its larger pieces create a rugged and natural appearance.
Choose Supreme Walk-On Bark when you want a smaller and finer shredded product. Its smaller pieces create a more comfortable surface for informal garden paths and areas around raised garden boxes.
