Mountain Blend Compost for Garden Soil

Mountain Blend Compost is a dark, bark-rich soil amendment for gardens, flower beds and depleted planting areas. It is screened to approximately 3/8-inch minus and contains composted Douglas fir bark fines, compost, reed sedge peat moss, some soil and added slow-release plant food.

This blend adds organic material while helping loosen dense or depleted soil. Its coarse, woody texture also improves soil structure and creates better conditions for plant roots.

Mountain Blend is a soil amendment rather than a complete planting soil. Mix it thoroughly with existing soil instead of using it alone to fill a garden bed or planter.

Benefits of This Bark-Rich Soil Amendment

  • Adds organic matter to depleted soil
  • Helps loosen dense or compacted native soil
  • Improves soil structure and workability
  • Supports moisture retention while maintaining soil texture
  • Contains added slow-release plant food
  • Creates better growing conditions for plant roots

Because Mountain Blend Compost contains visible bark and woody organic material, it has a coarser texture than our finer compost options. Natural color, texture and moisture content will vary between loads.

Recommended Uses

  • Improving native clay soil before planting
  • Amending depleted vegetable gardens
  • Preparing new flower and landscape beds
  • Adding organic matter to existing planting areas
  • Improving soil structure around established garden areas
  • Creating a 50/50 garden-soil blend with native soil

Do not use Mountain Blend as a standalone planting soil. It needs to be mixed with native or existing soil before planting.

How to Mix Mountain Blend with Native Soil

For new gardens or severely depleted planting areas, mix Mountain Blend Compost and native soil at approximately a 50/50 ratio by volume. For example, combine one cubic yard of Mountain Blend with approximately one cubic yard of existing soil.

Mix the materials thoroughly throughout the entire planting area. Avoid placing the amendment as a separate layer because plant roots benefit from a consistent blend.

For general improvement of an existing garden or flower bed, spread approximately 2–3 inches over the area. Then mix it thoroughly into the top 6–8 inches of existing soil.

Application Depth and Coverage

One cubic yard covers approximately:

  • 324 square feet when spread 1 inch deep
  • 162 square feet when spread 2 inches deep
  • 108 square feet when spread 3 inches deep

These coverage figures describe the amendment before it is mixed with existing soil.

A light 1–2-inch layer can also be used around established plants in flower beds. However, incorporating it into the soil provides greater soil-conditioning benefits.

Mountain Blend is too coarse and woody for most lawn-top-dressing projects. For lawns, use our finer OMRI Listed Organic Compost instead.

Which Compost or Garden Soil Should You Choose?

Choose Mountain Blend Compost when you want a coarse, bark-rich amendment that adds organic matter and improves the structure of native or depleted soil.

Choose our OMRI Listed Organic Compost when you need a finer, versatile compost for gardens, flower beds or lawn top dressing.

Our Fertimulch Poultry Compost contains composted turkey, chicken and steer manure. It is a nutrient-rich option for loosening hard, compacted clay soil.

For raised beds, garden boxes or areas that need a complete ready-to-plant growing mix, use our Raised Bed Garden Soil.
