Affordable Screened Topsoil for Sod and Grading
Our Screened Topsoil is locally sourced native soil that has been processed through a 3/8-inch screen. Screening removes larger rocks, roots and soil clumps, making the material easier to spread, rake and grade than unscreened native soil.
This is an economical option for preparing areas under new sod, filling low spots, adjusting landscape grades and building up areas that need additional soil.

What Does 3/8-Inch Screened Mean?
The soil passes through a screen with 3/8-inch openings. This process removes larger rocks and debris, but it does not make the soil completely rock-free. Small rocks and other natural particles that fit through the screen may remain in the finished product.
Because this is a naturally occurring native soil, its color, clay content, moisture and amount of small rock can vary between loads.
Clay-Based Native Soil
Like most native soil found throughout the Salt Lake Valley, this Screened Topsoil has a high clay content. Clay-based soil holds moisture well, but it can become dense and compacted.
Screened Topsoil does not contain added compost, peat moss, fertilizer or other soil conditioners. If you need better drainage, more organic material or added nutrients, mix it with an appropriate compost or soil conditioner.
Is Screened Topsoil Right for a Garden?
We do not recommend using this product by itself as the finished growing soil in vegetable gardens, flower beds, planters or raised garden boxes.
You can use it as an economical bottom filler in a deep garden bed. Leave at least 12–18 inches at the top for our Raised Bed Garden Soil or another ready-to-plant growing mix.
To improve existing native soil, consider mixing in our OMRI Listed Organic Compost, Fertimulch Poultry Compost or Soil Pep Conditioner. Each product serves a different soil-conditioning purpose.
