1 Cubic Yard Weighs Approximately 1.25 Tons
Construction gravel – 1″ minus is a fully fractured, unwashed aggregate made for covered base applications. It contains angular rock measuring up to approximately 1 inch, along with progressively smaller pieces and fines. Those smaller particles help the material settle and compact beneath concrete, asphalt, pavers and other finished surfaces.
This product contains less sand and fine material than Recycled Road Base. However, it still arrives much dirtier than decorative landscape gravel. It is intended to provide support below another material rather than remain exposed as the finished surface.
Construction Gravel Base Applications
Use this 1-inch-minus construction gravel where a compactable aggregate base will be covered by a finished product. Common applications include:
- Base beneath concrete slabs, driveways and parking pads
- Base beneath asphalt
- Base beneath pavers and other hardscape surfaces
- Base preparation for retaining walls
- Backfill or deep fill that will be covered
- Utility construction and similar covered fill applications
Do not use this material as the exposed top layer of a driveway, parking area, pathway or landscape bed. Customers building a parking pad or driveway should plan for concrete, asphalt, pavers or another suitable finished surface over the compacted gravel base.
Why This Construction Gravel Arrives Dirty
This is an unwashed utility product. The fines that support its base-material function can coat the larger rocks and make a newly delivered load look dusty or dirty. Loads may also contain recycled aggregate, occasional construction debris and small amounts of organic material such as roots or plant matter.
The source materials and recycled content can change, so color is not guaranteed. One load may look different from another. Photos showing cleaner rock are included to demonstrate what some of the underlying aggregate may look like after the surface fines are rinsed away. They do not represent the appearance customers should expect at delivery.
Installation Depth and Compaction
The required base depth depends on the soil, finished surface, expected traffic and project specifications. Follow the requirements provided by the concrete, asphalt, paver or retaining-wall system being installed. Engineered projects should follow the approved plans.
Prepare the area to the required depth, place the gravel evenly and compact it as required before installing the finished surface. Account for settlement and compaction when calculating how much loose material to order.
